Frequently Asked Questions
Who can apply to the L’Oréal startup competition?
Startups of any size and stage are welcome to apply as long as they fit the needs and criteria that L’Oréal are looking for. You can see the criteria here
How many applicants are there?
Whilst it is impossible to say exactly how many applications we might receive we aim to scout at least 200 startups across the regions. Does it cost to participate in the competition? There is no cost to participate in the competition. Travel expenses to the final will be covered by L’Oréal.
What is the pitch deck and is it mandatory?
Your application will capture necessary details about your startup and the submission proposal will outline the challenge statement/s you are responding to, your proposal for L’Oréal as well as relevant examples and use cases. Make sure that your application and pitch deck answer all the selection criteria. You are free to add to your application a 2 minute video. The final pitch deck that you use for this application and the one you can use at the semi-final or final events may be different.
Is the information shared in the application kept confidential?

What kind of assistance is provided to help prepare for the semi-final or final events?
All semi-finalists and finalists will have the opportunity to attend a pitch training and preparation session, including one to one coaching.

Who judges the submissions?
The judges will be a range of L’Oréal brand, business and domain experts across the problem statement themes and relevant technologies.
Do we need to have application cases in the beauty industry?
We are looking forward to leveraging the advanced technology across the industry to help the development of beauty tech. If your technology is mature and you have already thought and considered the value that the beauty industry can bring, L’Oréal is experienced to accelerate the transformation of cross-industry technology; if not, we can explore together based on the platform L’Oréal provides.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF COMPETITION PARTICIPATION
By participating in the competition, the participant agrees to all and shall comply with the terms and conditions
Purpose of the L’Oréal Startup Competition
The purpose of the L’Oréal Startup Competition is to seek innovative technologies and solutions that may be utilised and commercialised in the market. All submitted applications will be evaluated, with the best submissions receiving opportunities to present to L’Oréal at the Grand Final Event.
Right to Participat
Any company or startup who is legally incorporated may participate in the L’Oréal Startup Competition.
Deadline for Participation
Applications must be submitted electronically by 15 JUL 2024 (23:59 SGT)
Procedure for Participation
Submissions in the competition must be entered in English via the dedicated website and relevant Google Forms. Your data will be processed in accordance with the Personal Data Protection Act (PDPA), Singapore.
Submitting an Application
Each participant must supply contact and company details that will be electronically saved, used and processed by the Organisers according to the consent gained from the participant in order to carry out the competition and assess the submissions. Each participant acknowledges that their contact details will be passed on to the official partners supporting the competition and organisation of the pitch and award ceremonies taking place. All solutions with completed mandatory fields by this deadline will automatically be entered into the competition. Submitted additional documentation will be shown to the partners assessing the applications.
The Organisers have the right to verify the eligibility of each participant. Applications that are incomplete or do not adhere to the rules or specifications may be disqualified at the sole discretion of the Organisers.
If the participant uses fraudulent methods or otherwise attempts to circumvent the rules, its submission may be removed from eligibility at the sole discretion of the Organiser.
Any ideas or applications found to be plagiarized, offensive, or unethical may be screened & disqualified
Evaluation Process
All completed submissions go through first filtering by a group of experts. After, the official L’Oréal judges evaluate and rate the submissions based on the following criteria:
- Product / Market Fit and startup maturity
- Relevance to L’Oréal
- Technology
- Sustainability
- Scalability
- Unique match with L’Oréal problem statement
- Unique match with areas of interest
- Piloting potential
Selected applications will be notified by email on confirmation for details including date, time, mode of delivery and location (if applicable) of the Pitch events.

Confidentiality
The personnel and experts involved in the organisation and evaluation of the competition are committed to treating all matters confidentially.
Startup competition winners, and their respective submissions will be identified and made public during the pitch and award ceremonies. Once the solutions have been awarded, the organiser takes no further responsibility regarding further cooperation between participants and the official partners, despite the awards
Privacy
By submitting an application, each participant agrees to the organiser disclosing the participant’s personal information to its sponsors, contractors, and agents to assist in conducting the competition and communicating with participants
Title and Intellectual Property
Intellectual Property Rights (“IPR”) means all intellectual property rights related to each solution or submission including, without limitation, patents (including utility models), pending patent applications, copyrights (including copyrights covering software or firmware), mask works on integrated circuit mask sets, design patents, and designs (whether or not capable of registration), chip topography rights and other like protection, trademarks and any other form of statutory protection of any kind and applications for any of the foregoing as well as any trade secrets or other intellectual property rights, whether in existence now or created, invented or developed in the future.
Participation in this competition shall not modify, transfer or otherwise affect the title, right or ownership of any copyrights, patents, trademarks, trade names, logos or any other IPR existing in any submitted solution. Any and all such rights shall remain the exclusive property of the respective party and/or participant owning such rights.
L’Oréal reserves the right to use the winning products and the finalist submissions in any publicity or promotion relating to the competition after the winner is announced. L’Oréal may use a winner and/or finalist participants’ name, photos and videos (including the photos and videos taken of the finalists and winners in events and award ceremonies) and a description of the idea in any publicity or promotion relating to the competition and that L’Oréal has the right to publicize the winning prototype/product and the names of all the finalists and/or award winners, all without royalty or consideration. L’Oréal is not granting any IPR protection in connection with the competition and makes no warranties of any kind related thereto. Participants are solely responsible for protecting any and all IPR in any submissions and should do so before entering the competition. Despite all efforts taken by L’Oréal to keep the submitted solutions confidential prior to the publication of the product or prototype, each participant understands and agrees that L’Oréal does not assume any liability for any damage resulting from the submitted product or prototype becoming public.
Disclaimer of Liability
The organiser shall not be liable for any damage, loss, or injury suffered by reason of applying and participating in this competition. The organiser excludes liability for loss of income, loss of opportunity, personal injury, and damage to property, whether direct or indirect, consequential or foreseeable due to some negligent act or omission or otherwise.
The organiser accepts no responsibility for late, lost, incomplete, incorrectly submitted, delayed, illegible, corrupted or misdirected entries or correspondence whether due to error, omission, alteration, tampering, deletion, theft, destruction, transmission interruption, communications failure or otherwise. The organiser has no control over telephone communications, networks, or lines and accepts no responsibility for any problems associated with them, whether due to traffic congestion, technical malfunction, or otherwise. The organiser is not liable for any consequences of user error including (without limitation) costs incurred.
